For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. Romans 12:3-8

This week, we see that Paul will use this section of this letter to begin to hand out our assignments. He doesn’t just start listing all the tasks and responsibilities that we have and putting a name on each job. He does, however, begin to transition to a point that strictly expresses that now we understand what salvation means, the next step in our progression is to begin our service. He is very careful to outline that there are various avenues to service, and that everyone has an area in which they could make the most impact.

Paul writes that we are to be humble in our faith, even though it is something that we should be excited about and shout it loudly. He also states that God gives us the gifts that we should be willing to use for His will. Very often, we see that people use their gifts for the betterment of wealth, fortune, and fame. And while there may be nothing wrong with that, it is still important for us to focus most of that energy back toward glorifying him. Often, we are incapable, in our flesh, of managing the dynamic of how we use our talents. So, we must rely on the help of the Holy Spirit to aid us in such areas of our lives.

Are you using the gifts that God gave you to glorify Him? Are you more concerned about how you look to your boss than how you serve the God of the Universe? We must diligently work toward developing our God-given talents in the service of him, not in the service of ourselves.
