But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23
Today (Sept. 2nd), we celebrate Bonnie Brown and her 40th Anniversary working in the office at Burlington Baptist. Bonnie started working part-time (15 hours a week) back in 1980. She had two children and so a part-time job was just what she was looking for. Bonnie felt the Lord’s leading to apply for that job and has been here ever since. She said this morning, “it just doesn’t seem like it could be 40 years.” Bonnie has served alongside five senior pastors, multiple interim pastors, multiple other office and staff, and with Jeff for over half of her 40 years. We often suggest that she should write a book. Her usual response is a smile.
Now, I’ve only worked with Bonnie for a little over a year so most of you have known her much longer. What I can say about Bonnie is that she is kind, gentle, faithful, hard-working and so pleasant to work with. We’ve all worked with people that we kind of dread having to go to their office when we need something; that has never been my experience with Bonnie. When I was thinking about a description of Bonnie, Galatians 5:22-23 came to my mind as I began to think about how I so often see the fruit of the Spirit displayed in her life. While Bonnie never pursues the limelight, her life often displays love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
We are very thankful for Bonnie and her 40 years of faithful service. She is definitely the go-to person around the office as she knows the names of most of our members and usually knows a little about their children, parents, and other connections. She knows well the finances of the church as she has been our financial secretary for over 20 years. Bonnie is married to Greg and they have two children: Mike and Gregory. Bonnie has 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Even though Bonnie and Greg live in Glencoe, they still attend Burlington Baptist.
We celebrated Bonnie’s anniversary on Tuesday, but we made sure it was her anniversary not her retirement. Bonnie loves her job and is looking forward to many more anniversaries at BBC (Lord willing). If you are a member of BBC, you might not know Bonnie well, but you can bet she knows your name. Maybe you want to send her a note/card to show your appreciation for her many years of service. Feel free to send her a note to Burlington Baptist, 3031 Washington Street. You can put Bonnie’s name on the card and be assured she will get it because she is the one who most often gets our mail.
While we particularly celebrate Bonnie today, we are also so thankful for so many of you who serve in various capacities around the church. We know that COVID-19 has disrupted some of your service and ministry but this virus (Lord willing) will soon be gone. We are very thankful for all who are helping with our children ministries. It is such a blessing to have Bible studies for all ages on Sunday mornings and have willing volunteers each week. May God bless your faithfulness and we say “Thanks!”
Have a very blessed Labor Day weekend.
